Awards: James McBride Wins National Book Award

James McBride has won the 2013 National Book Award for his novel, Good Lord Bird. To be eligible for the award, authors had to be American citizens and to have written books that were published in the United States between Dec. 1, 2012, and Nov. 30, 2013. The winners received $10,000 and a bronze statue.

Maya Angelou was also recognized with the Literarian Award for Outstanding Service to the American Literary Community. The award was presented by Toni Morrison.
