Awards: 2013 Ernest J. Gaines Award for Literary Excellence

Ernest J. Gaines Award for Literary ExcellenceAttica Locke’s The Cutting Season has won the 2013 Ernest J. Gaines Award for Literary Excellence. The Award, initiated by donors of the Baton Rouge Area Foundation to honor Ernest Gaines, is designed to inspire and recognize rising African-American writers of excellence as they work to achieve the literary heights for which Ernest J. Gaines is known. It comes with a prize of $10,000. The Cutting Season is a murder mystery set at a restored Louisiana sugar plantation.
